Boring wednesdays...we have labs in the morning and 3 lectures in the afternoon after lunch. And it is so friggin' boring. Feels like i can sleep even sitting in the first row. Anyways, i was in a serious kindof mood, so here is what i wrote...
Booms of gunshots ring in the distance. "Must be da allied forces wiping out the hidden germans!", says my fellow Red Cross volunteer to me as we roll over a dead french soldier onto a stretcher. Yes, i think, must be those allied soldiers who havent been doomed to death in this field of war, like this poor french guy who must have woken up today wishing his comrades 'Bonjour', not knowing that by the end of this day, he would be dead, shot through the heart.
I stare at the corpses of the other 4 soldiers which we had just loaded onto the truck. While i am lost in deep thought, philosophisizing about war, my helper softly whistles 'November Rain'. (i know it wasnt there at the time of world war, but please bear with me!) All i can think is that the song has a strange significance in the situation. It is the month of November and it is raining blood.
Our next dead soldier seems to be quite young. He must have been the unfortunate victim of The Draft. Yes, that must be it. My heart weeps for the young recruit who couldn't enjoy the colorful pleasures of life, but was instead forcefully pushed into this bitter world of war which recognizes none but the color of blood: red!
And here lies a german, smiling even in his death. Somehow, i feel confused wether to feel hatred for all the wrongs that his leader has done to all the allied nations or feel sympathy, for he too was just a human.
Gods great creations, as we humans are called, have lilliputian value as compared to lands surrounded by barbed wires for which nations fight. 'Power makes a man corrupt' - This was very correctly pointed out by (i assume!) some wise old man. "Hey mahn! We gotcha go! Watcha thinkin abou' eh? we hav ta get a move on!", exclaimed my partner who was seated behind the wheel. His exclamation in his accented english shattered my thoughts. I stumbled to the passenger seat and sat down heavily.
As my partner stepped on the ga, i reverted back to my line of thought - 'power makes a man corrupt'. Yes, it is certainly so. Hitler and his Nazis proved this every day of their life. How could a man live on knowing that he was responsible for millions of death! Knowing that those who died had a family of their own! Knowing that every single man who died might result in the ending of a whole bloodline! Knowing that he wouldn't even find a place in hell!
Crash - came the sound from the back of the truck as my pal raced over the bumpy village roads without a care for his luggage. And true, why should he care? After all, they were but dead bodies. How did it matter if one toppled over and fell on another. But then why did my heart leap into my mouth on hearing that sound?! Maybe i am thinking too much. Maybe i should simply learn to ignore all the slaughtering that is going on all around me. Like my friend next to me who is now murmuring a distant song from some forgotten movie..
'Maybe you should pay attention on the board....the teacher has been staring at you for the pasy five minutes...', said my friend sitting in the seat next to me and i couldnt write any more....!! :)
